One of the best things that has occurred in funeral service over the past twenty years has been the utilization of answering services. It has freed many small funeral home operators and allowed them to develop a life away from the business and the telephones. It has allowed larger funeral service operations a cost effective means of answering phones after hours without the fear of violating wage and hour standards.
Several years ago, Pearson's made the transition to using an answering service. Upon the recommendation of a consultant, we contracted with a large out-of-state company which specializes in funeral homes. They advertised a number of features which appeared to be quite attractive, and since they were answering for funeral home all over the United States, we felt that we were in good hands. It was not too long before we began experiencing problems. Their operators were from the north and occasionally had difficulty with our local dialects. They were unfamiliar with local institutions, such as hospitals and nursing homes, and this lack of knowledge would occasionally cause problems.
Two years ago, we switched to Astro Communications. It is easy to understand why they have become the answering service of choice for the independent funeral homes in the Louisville area. They make every effort to know how each of their client funeral homes wish things done. They know how to ask for embalming authorizations, give directions, deal politely with the public, contact embalming services (if that is how a particular funeral home handles removals) or will contact directly the embalmers on call. They fax the information on the person to the funeral home prior to any arrangements. To date, we have never received a single negative comment from either a family of any of our personnel regarding Astro Communications. I recommend them without reservation.
